What baby items should I wash and sanitize before use?
As you begin nesting and unpacking those baby shower gifts, you may be wondering which items need to be washed before your newborn arrives. Here is a little guide to washing and sanitizing new (and used) baby items.
Washing
It is best to use hot water and dish soap to wash your little one’s items. A lot of families choose to purchase and exclusively wash baby items in a small tub or basin with a drain that will fit in their sink. This is a great option as it can reduce the risk of cross-contamination (and can be set to the side when not in use). Whether your items are new or used, they should still be washed in hot water and soap.
Sanitizing
There are a few ways to sanitize your newborn’s things; a sanitizing bag for the microwave, a bottle sanitizer (a countertop appliance that steams and heat drys items), or place the items in a pot of actively boiling water for 5 minutes (making sure to use a pot large enough that your items are not touching the sides). It is important to check the instructions on your items for any warnings about items that may melt or deform during the sanitization process.
Items you should wash AND sanitize:
Bottles (all parts)
Pacifiers
Silicone Teethers
Pump Parts (follow your pump’s instructions on which parts should be sanitized)
Laundry
Before using clothes, blankets, swaddles, and crib sheets, it’s important to wash them. Use a fragrance-free detergent (any type will do; baby-specific laundry soap isn’t necessary).
Pro Tip: For items with Velcro (such as Halo swaddles), secure the Velcro before washing to prevent it from catching on other items and causing damage.
